This dataset from Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research shows the mean annual solar radiation across NZ. Higher ‘elevations’ indicate more solar radiation, which has the bizarre effect of inverting the mountain ranges of the south west.

I live in the high, bright bit towards the north. I can confirm it’s pretty sunny.
