A 3D view of one of New Zealand’s Great Walks.

The issue with using the LINZ Topomap images for 3D perspective maps is that unless you’re looking due north, the text isn’t very readable.

I took the underlying data and recreated the style of the Topomaps, without any text. I then used this in Blender to create a 3D view, and added my own text in Illustrator.

Areas of water were masked out and given a glossy material, allowing for reflections of the mountains to be seen.
