The Isthmus of Auckland
Hochstetter’s 1859 map of the Auckland Volcanic Field
Rendered in 3D using modern elevation data
“The Isthmus of Auckland with its extinct Volcanoes” is one of the iconic maps of the geological history of New Zealand’s largest city.
I used this as a test-piece for georeferencing modern elevation data to old maps, which I could then render in Blender, introducing some texture and shadows to give the map a three-dimensional, almost touchable, feel.
Adjusting the digital elevation model to match required over 100 control points, squishing summits and coastlines to line up with their mapped locations.
