Haupapa / Tasman Glacier
Ski touring trip to Tasman Saddle Hut
New Zealand Alpine Club / Alpine Recreation
Me and a few friends went on a guided ski touring trip to the top of Haupapa/Tasman Glacier, staying in the Tasman Saddle Hut.
These 3D maps of our routes up and down were created in Blender using imagery and elevation data from the LINZ Data Service. The routes were tracked by GPS watch, and brought into Blender as a shapefile using the BlenderGIS plugin.
I couldn’t get the 3D tracks looking how I wanted them to in Blender, so in the end I rendered each scene as two layers: one with the 3D imagery, and one with just the tracks in 3D space. I could then add both of these to Illustrator, and use the tracks as a guide to draw them manually. I also added the annotations in Illustrator.
The sky is from a photo I took on the trip, and was added to the images via compositing in Blender, along with a slight vignette, though these could also just have easily been done in Illustrator.
